I disagree the notion of life that likes a candle that burns oneself to shine other(s), then her/his life doesn't make sense anymore. I prefer the Buddhism teaching, life should be everything and that is called life, but for oneself, s/he should know how to enjoy life, shining other(s) won't hurt oneself is something I would suggest everybody should do.
We don't have to reach an agreement my friend, the meaning of 意義 in life in very personal, I'm glad that you've adopted your personal view on Buddhism's to be yours, but there're others...
Since you are a close buddy, allow me to give tips that you judge yourself, it is just examples:
A/ 2 persons in love, therefore they are together. One person loves the other, shall the other force himself or herself to stick with? B/ I only can save you once, I can't save you forever, it is the time you should stand up on your own feet. C/ When I am capable to donate, I will donate and that will continue and last forever, but if I donate more than I can afford, I just hurt myself and it won't last.
I try to avoid politics in this forum so I'll only reply to you in a straight forward way:
A. If these 2 persons are truly in love, and I mean TRULY, why does one have to 'FORCE' him/herself to 'STICK' with the other? （拗晒頭。。。） B. If that's your personal experience, I can't offer any opinion, but in general, 長貧難顧， I agree. C. Any form of donation has to come from your conscience, you do it when you feel like to, not when you can afford to. I don't regard myself Buddhist but that's how I understand from Buddhism.
The examples given meant to help you understand. When you don't understand, sometimes it is because you don't see what your parents see, in other words, I see the same way that they see, okay try this:
I was born, grew up and marred, then I have my own family----what I do, I am responsible for my wife and son future...so I can't burn myself to shine others.
In Buddhism, if you are a child, you need a permission from your parents in order to be a monk. If you are married, you need a permission from your wife in order to be a monk, when you are a father, you need a permission from your minor children in order to be a monk,
In this planet, there are too many religions, too many types of people, it is not good and impossible to save everybody to waste yourself...if there has no great man, it still goes on.
We should learn, let the nature grow and take place.
In a broader sense, Buddha is a candle, so is Jesus, Allah..., 又或者黃花崗七十二烈士... But in a downsized universe, we're all candles one way or the other: You work hard to support your family, you're the candle; shining your own wife & son.
Not only you don't understand Buddha, you don't know Jesus neither...I wonder if he really knew who he was besides people told him what he was...I am just responsible for my child, because I gave him birth, once he grows up, he is on his own, because more I get involved his life, more I am on his way to success, maybe some advices, yes.
I definitely don't want to give up a Filet Mignon if I were you... who wants to be a hero, go ahead, be my guest.
I like the story, and it is a close example for two of us...but...
Let's talk something we know and agree....
Buddhism or Buddha and us is a teacher and a student relationship ....not like Christ...because I can't accept a virgin who could have given birth to start...
What Buddhism teaching is a person then many persons agree on then they teach what they see...you and me buy or do not buy it is our decision....since when a guy like me 54+ and starting like Buddhism?
In fact, Buddhism teaching teaches us how to live happily and be smarter...give up one's life is not what it teaches....on the other hand, you need to give up something in order to have more or have more quality stuffs in life, I believe that is what Buddhism all about.
In regard candle as a sample or sacrefice, I really don't see it happened to any Buddhas and why should they have done such things...of course rumors or words used saying won't count. Everybody does its job.
When you learn Buddhism, you will find some conflict in it, but no need to take it seriously, it just wants to guide you for your own benefits---how to see things lightly...after all, if you can put down, forgiving others means you make your life easier..
When you look at today's VN and it is what the communists did not want...same as China...who fought hard and harder is for themselves or they were wrong, some stupid things stick in their mind...you never know 72 heroes did not participate the event, because it came to their own interests....if Japs occupied China and becoming a nation, who knows by that time, Chinese people changed their culture and becoming one new...just like the . Like the Big Han and no Japan.

Buddhism is not what Buddhism we thought it was.
還記得童年時讀過七個盲人摸大象的故事嗎？雖然摸過之後各持己見，好好一隻大象在他們口中變成七不像，但由於這樣明眼人才會涉入說出真相，我們才可以讀到這樣有趣的故事。
